Reasons to Spend the Summer in Newfoundland and Labrador
Newfoundland is legendary for having ‘four seasons in one day’, but when the summer comes, we do all we can to take advantage of it. There’s no shortage of festivals and events to be found during the fleeting summer months.
We may not be a tropical destination, but when the temperatures rise, and the population emerges from the icy winter, the real spirit of the province comes alive.
Here are just a few of the festivals and events you can find:
The Westward Viking Festival: A Real Taste of Vinland
Get to know your inner Viking! There will be an unveiling of a statue of Leif Eriksson on July 28, the launch of a book featuring Anne Stein Ingstad’s L’Anse aux Meadows diary edited by her daughter Benedicte, a Viking feast, tours, music, dancing and much more.
St. John’s Days
Celebrate birthday of one of the oldest cities in North America! There’ll be historical open houses and great cultural demonstrations plus many free-admission events for the entire family.
The Roy Babstock Beaches Accordion Festival
There are few things that say Newfoundland like accordion music. Featuring a youth concert a ‘Best of Bonavista Bay’ event, a gospel show and over 50 different musical performers, you’re bound to find something to make you kick your heels up!
Soirees and Times – Anchors Aweigh
Experience a night of live traditional Newfoundland and Labrador music and learn about our diverse and colorful culture through stories and songs, mixed with a healthy sprinkling of humor.
Canada Day Celebrations – St. John’s
Not only do Newfoundlanders get to ring in the new year before anyone else in Canada, we get to celebrate Canada day as well! Join the sunrise ceremony, enjoy cake, bouncy castles, games of chance, and family concerts – all leading up to the perfect ending for a birthday bash: a huge fireworks display!
These are just a few of the hundreds of festivals happening across the province in the summer months. What are your favourite summer activities in the province? Let me know!
